Protect Your Personal Energy: 6 Daily Habits to Stop Carrying Other People’s Stress

We all know how easy it is to absorb other people’s stress. A friend vents, a family member is upset, or the news feels overwhelming, and suddenly you’re carrying the weight as if it were your own. Over time, that can leave you restless, drained, and disconnected from yourself.

The good news? You can learn simple daily habits to protect your personal energy so you can stay grounded, show up with compassion, and stop carrying storms that don’t belong to you.

Have you ever noticed?

A friend shares their struggles, a family member is in crisis, a co-worker is frustrated, or the news leaves you worried and heavy. Out of empathy, care, and compassion, we take it in. But instead of feeling well informed, or being the steady support a friend or co-worker might need, we end up getting swept up in the storm, or even worse, carrying their storm with us.

We bring it with us throughout the day, we bring it home to our families, and unsuspecting loved ones. We carry it in our bodies as restlessness, tension, or exhaustion. And we go through our day feeling off, drained, and disconnected from ourselves.

This is why caring for your personal energy matters. Just like brushing your teeth or washing your face, practicing “energy hygiene” helps you release what is not yours, stay grounded in your own center, and be present without taking on the world or other people’s burdens. Protecting your personal energy doesn’t make you selfish; it allows you to show up with more clarity, compassion, and strength.

Here are six daily practices that can help you in maintaining and protecting your personal energy to keep from carrying storms that don’t belong to you.

1. Ground Yourself in Nature

One of the most powerful ways to reset your personal energy is to reconnect with the natural world. Nature has a way of bringing us back into rhythm when life pulls us off center.

Try walking slowly through the trees, or sit by a calming body of water such as a pond or lake. Let your eyes soften as you take in the colors of nature around you. Breathe deeply and let the scent of earth, or grass, remind your body that you are supported.

If you can, take off your shoes and let your bare feet touch the ground. This practice, of “earthing,” helps discharge built-up stress and restores balance to your nervous system. Feel the texture of the soil, grass, or sand beneath you, and imagine your worries sinking down into the earth with every exhale.

If you can’t get out, you can bring this practice closer to home. Water your house plants slowly and mindfully, paying attention to how the soil drinks in the water. Spend time tending to an indoor garden. It can be a grounding ritual if you do it with intention. These small acts connect you back to the cycle of life and gently remind your body and mind that you are part of something larger and steady.

2. Cleanse with Water

Water is a natural reset for both body and energy. A mindful shower can become a powerful ritual. As the water flows, imagine it rinsing away emotions or tension that are not yours.

For a deeper release, soak in a warm bath with Epsom salt. As you sink into the water, set an intention to let go of what you have absorbed from others. The warmth relaxes your body, while the water itself symbolizes renewal and a deeper release. The magnesium relaxes your body while the ritual helps you let go. You may choose to add a few drops of lavender or chamomile essential oil to enhance your experience.

Even the intentional practice of rinsing or washing your hands after a difficult interaction can act as a symbolic release. Similar to the mindful shower, you can imagine washing away any difficult feelings and emotions.

3. Breathe and Reset

When you pick up on other people’s stress, your own breath often becomes shallow. You can easily reset by slowing down your breathing intentionally to help bring you back to your own rhythm. Conscious intentional breathing is a simple practice that is simple, easy, and available to you no matter where you go. Simply place your hand over your heart area, inhale slowly through your nose, and exhale gently through your mouth. As you breathe, repeat silently: This is mine. That is theirs. Each breath helps restore your personal space.

4. Visualize Protective Boundaries

Before you walk into a social event, a family visit, or a situation you know might be draining, take a quiet moment to imagine a protective shield of light around you. Choose a color that feels right — white for clarity, blue for calm, or pink for compassion.

This protective boundary doesn’t block others out. It simply helps you stay rooted in your own energy so you can listen and support without carrying the weight home with you.

After the event, take a few minutes to shake off or release what you may have picked up. Step outside, breathe deeply, or wash your hands with the intention of letting it go. These small acts can help you reset before you move on with your day.

5. Use Natural Tools for Clearing

Sometimes a situation lingers long after it’s over. Tools from nature can help clear and refresh your space. Burning sage or palo santo, diffusing calming oils, or carrying a grounding stone like black tourmaline can remind you to release what isn’t yours and return to balance.

Think of these tools as gentle helpers — not to rely on, but to support you as you practice staying centered.

6. Reflect and Release

At the end of the day, pause and ask yourself: What am I still holding onto that doesn’t belong to me?

Journaling, naming your feelings out loud, or closing your eyes and visualizing yourself releasing the weight can help lighten your load. Imagine handing the storm back where it belongs and reclaiming your own peace.
